Over the past few weeks, I had the privilege of coordinating a life-changing initiative, a free cataract surgical camp for Kiambu residents, held at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital. Eye health has often been overlooked in healthcare priorities, yet its impact on quality of life is profound. It is this realization that gave birth to the Vision Impact Project, an initiative dedicated to accelerating Universal Health Coverage and reducing avoidable blindness.Organizing this camp required extensive event management skills to ensure its success. I spearheaded the planning and execution of every aspect, from coordinating with the government to integrating services into existing health structures for sustainability. Key elements included assembling a skilled ophthalmic team, setting up specialized equipment, securing consumables, managing logistics, and creating a seamless flow of activities throughout the event.The surgical camp, held from December 11th to 13th, was the first of its kind at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital. Over the three days, 303 patients underwent successful surgeries, regaining their vision. This achievement was the result of meticulous coordination, effective time management, and clear communication among all stakeholders.One of the most fulfilling moments was witnessing the patients’ joy as their bandages were removed, seeing the world clearly for the first time in years. This reinforced the importance of detailed planning and execution in creating transformative experiences.Beyond the event itself, this initiative exemplified sustainable impact by equipping government facilities with the capacity and resources to continue providing essential eye care services.
