SpaceX Starship's Ocean Landing: A Charred Success (2025)

Witness the spectacular finale of SpaceX's Starship Flight Test 11! After a flawless mission, the giant spacecraft concluded its journey with a fiery splashdown in the Indian Ocean. This incredible feat, captured in a brand-new video, showcases the culmination of weeks of preparation and innovation.

On October 13th, Starship soared into the sky from SpaceX's Starbase in South Texas, marking its eleventh test flight. This launch was particularly significant as it was the final one for the current 397-foot-tall (121-meter-tall) version of the Super Heavy booster and Ship upper stage. A taller variant is already in the works, promising even more ambitious future flights.

Flight Test 11 mirrored the success of its predecessor, and even surpassed it! The footage reveals significantly less wear and tear on the vehicle during its descent through Earth's atmosphere, with notably less discoloration on the heatshield compared to Flight 10. This is a testament to the advancements SpaceX is making with each launch.

This mission achieved every single goal, from the initial liftoff to the booster's return and splashdown in the Gulf, and the Ship's successful landing in the Indian Ocean. The Super Heavy booster was making its second flight, demonstrating its reusability and reliability. It's the second consecutive test flight where Starship has accomplished all of SpaceX's objectives, a major step forward in the rocket's development.

Starship successfully deployed a stack of eight simulated Starlink satellites and flawlessly reignited a Raptor engine in space. But here's where it gets controversial: This launch diverged from Flight 10's mission profile with changes to the engine burn patterns, all in preparation for the upgraded version 3 of the rocket.

The upper stage's landing burn, in particular, was different from its previous flight, this time simulating the approach it will need to return to its launch site. There, the launch tower is designed to catch and secure Starship midair during its landing. SpaceX's cameras, mounted on drones and buoys, captured Starship's descent through the clouds in stunning detail. The video shows the vehicle executing its innovative flip-and-burn landing maneuver, transitioning from a 'bellyflop' position to an upright orientation as its engines slowed its momentum.
